1998 is widely recognized as an excellent
vintage especially for the
Merlot
varietal. Depending or the wine growing region, the
Cabernet
varietal had more problems to mature properly.
Consequently, Pomerol and
St-Emilion, which have a higher proportion of
Merlot, have done
outstandingly well.
On the Gironde's left
bank, the St-Julien and
Medoc have produced quite impressive
wines too.
The Sauternes-Barsac
sweet wines are fine and
elegant but
clearly behind the outstanding 1998
vintage.
