Hard
A tasting term for a wine that contains high
acidity
and-or
tannin content leading to a sensation of dryness in the mouth
and is therefore unpleasant. |

|
Harsh
Tasting term describing
astringent wines,
often with a high
alcohol
component. |
|
|
Hazy
Tasting term referring to
unfiltered or
unfined wines. |
|
|
Hectare
Hectare (ha), the most commonly metric measurement of area in viticulture, is 10,000
square meters, equivalent to approx. 2.5 acres. |

|
Hectolitre (hl)
A metric measure of volume corresponding to 100
litres. |
|
|
Herbaceous
Tasting term related to wines with a
grassy or
greenish
taste or aroma of herbs. |
|
|
Hogshead
A hogshead is wine barrel with a volume of approx. 240
litres
(63 gallons).
|
|
|
Hollow
Tasting term describing a wine which lacks
texture between "attack"
and "finish". |
|
|
Hot
Tasting term defining a wine with too much
alcohol and
providing a burning
sensation in the mouth. |
|
|
Imperiale
A large bottle format equivalent to eight 0.75
litres bottles. |
|
|
In bond
This term is used for wines which are held in a bonded warehouse,
and have not been subject to duty or value added tax. |
|
|
Integrated
A tasting term used to describe when the tannins and
acidity
of a developing wine fade as the wine is ageing. |
|
|
Jeroboam
A large bottle format equivalent to four 0.75
litres bottles. |
