Lactic acid
Lactic acid is the conversion of the
malic acid to lactic acid by the
malolactic fermentation. |

Late harvest
Also known as late picked, refers to wine made from grapes that are
left to ripen on the vine longer than for dry white wines. Wines made from
botrytis-affected grapes
such as
Sauternes, are good examples of
late harvested
sweet white
wines. |

Leafy
Leafy refers to wines with a "grassy"
note. |
|
|
Lean
Tasting term meaning that the wine's
body
feels
thin
on the
palate. |
|
|
Lees
Lees refer to sediments of dead
yeast that occurs during and after
fermentation, or are carried by the action of
"fining".
Lees can also consist of pips, grape pulp and other solids. US
winemakers use the term "mud". They are removed by
filtration
and by
racking the wine off the lees. |

Also called
tears, legs is a tasting term referring to the tear-like

Length
A tasting term almost a synonym for "finish",
length describes how long the flavour of the wine persists
on the

Tasting term describing a

and/or
sugar.. |

Lightstruck
A tasting term for a cooked a wine that has had long exposure to
ultraviolet light. |

Litre
Litre (liter in US) is a metric unit of capacity equal to the volume
of 1 kilogram of pure water at 4 degrees centigrade and 760 mm of
mercury (or approximately 1.76 pints) with a volume equal to 33.8
ounces. |

Lively
Tasting term quite similar to
fresh. |

Look
A tasting term used for the sensory description of a wine.

Lush
Tasting term for wines with high amounts of
residual sugar.
Generally used for
sweet white wines. |
